Finding the right travel insurance when you’re over 65
Just because you’re 65, it doesn’t mean you want life to slow down. Many people find that as they get older they have more time to travel and look forward to using their golden years to see more of the world.
However, finding travel insurance when you’re over 65 can have some challenges. Standard travel insurance policies might have age limits in place, and you may also have a pre-existing medical condition that needs consideration. Luckily, Age Co Travel Insurance is here to help. We work with AllClear to offer travel insurance that’s able to cover 1,300 different pre-existing conditions and has no upper age limit in place.
What does over 65s travel insurance cover?
We’ve worked carefully to find a provider that helps us deliver travel insurance that’s suited to the over 65s. With Age Co, you’ll be able to enjoy the following benefits while on your next big trip:
- 99% of pre-existing conditions covered
- No upper age limit
- Covid cover included with every policy
- 24/7 medical assistance included as standard
- Up to unlimited emergency medical and repatriation cover
- Protection for personal items and medical equipment
- UK, Europe and Worldwide destinations
- Cancellation cover across Gold/Gold Plus/Platinum
What can affect travel insurance protection?
Whether you’re 65 or 105, there are a few things to bear in mind when taking out travel insurance. It’s important to be honest about your medical history, as failure to disclose information can invalidate any future claims. Likewise, if you decide to travel against medical advice or go abroad to obtain treatment, then you may no longer be covered.
Travelling with pre-existing medical conditions
Research by our partners at AllClear has shown that when we get to between 60-69 there is a 59% chance of us having two or more medical conditions. When this is the case, we not only want to ensure we can find the right travel insurance policy but that it offers benefits suited to our health needs.
With Age Co Travel Insurance, we’re able to offer coverage for over 1,300 pre-existing medical conditions, including:
- Diabetes
- Mobility impairment
- Heart conditions
- Back problems
- Cancer
- Epilepsy
Our over 65 travel insurance also provides a range of benefits related to protecting you from unexpected medical bills. From emergency medical expenses to protecting personal medical equipment, we aim to offer travel insurance that helps you make the most of your holiday and later life.

Frequently asked questions
Does a GHIC card protect you when you're over 65?
A Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) will allow you to access free or discounted emergency medical care while in EU countries and Switzerland. Even if you’re over 65, there are no age limits in place. However, this does mean you won’t be protected in countries outside of those listed. A GHIC card also doesn’t extend to private treatment and lacks a lot of the benefits of standard travel insurance, such as protection from theft, legal action, cancellations and more. Therefore, we always recommend you consider taking out a travel insurance policy, instead of relying on the GHIC card.
When should I take out over 65s travel insurance?
It’s up to the traveller when to take out a policy. However, it’s worth considering your options once a trip has been booked. This is because many policies, including those offered by Age Co, include protection against cancellations. The further in advance you take out travel insurance, the more you get out of this benefit. Many providers will let you take out a single-trip policy one year in advance, while annual coverage means any holiday taken in a 12 month period is protected.
Can you still get annual travel insurance at 65?
Yes, providing the provider doesn’t have an age limit in place. At Age Co, our travel insurance lets everyone, whether they’re over or under 65, select from annual and single-trip coverage. If you have more than two holidays planned for the upcoming year, you might find it more cost-effective to choose annual travel insurance and save yourself the time it takes to apply for several single-trip policies. Just make sure you disclose all your planned destinations while you get a quote, as this will help to make sure you’re fully protected.
Does being over 65 affect the cost of travel insurance?
While costs may increase with age, there are ways to bring the price of your policy down. Certain destinations will cost more than others to visit, due to the price of the healthcare in these regions, or the risk of contracting disease. By avoiding these areas, your insurance can be more affordable. And, remember, price is only one factor to consider with a policy. You still want to make sure that your travel insurance provides robust protection against medical bills, cancellations, and lost/stolen property.
