Can over 80s get travel insurance?
While some providers can exclude older travellers, there are still plenty of options out there. At Age Co, our Travel Insurance has no upper age limit. We also offer a range of features that many older travellers can enjoy, including protection for medical equipment and travelling companions, such as family or a carer. This means you can travel with confidence at any age. So whether you’re off on a European mini-break or a longer sunny getaway, you can find the right protection with Age Co.

Will I have to pass a medical test to get over 80s travel insurance?
It is unlikely that any medical test will be required by your insurer. While inquiring about a quote, simply declare your known medical conditions to find out what cover options are available for your trip. Never be tempted to omit any conditions, as this can put you at risk of invalidating your policy.
Over 80s travel insurance: optional extras
No two travellers are the same, which is why Age Co Travel Insurance offers a range of Optional Extras. Available for all three levels of cover, you can choose to tailor your coverage with any of these optional extras.
Travelling companion cover: if you’re travelling with a friend or family member who is insured by another provider, this will cover the cost of their cancellation or curtailment, should you become unwell and aren’t able to travel.
Waiting list cover: protects you in the event of any pending medical treatment getting in the way of your holiday. For example, if a scheduled operation is brought forward and your trip needs to be cut short.
Gadget cover: we offer extra protection for items such as cameras, mobile phones, tablets, and laptops. Should they be lost, stolen or suffer from accidental damage, you’ll be covered for up to £2,500.
Golf cover: keen golfers can get peace of mind for their next big trip with cover that includes protection for both equipment and green fees.
Natural disaster cover: if your trip is disrupted by unforeseen circumstances, such as wildfires or a typhoon, you’ll be compensated for flight and accommodation costs.

Frequently asked questions
What doesn't over 80s travel insurance cover?
With Age Co, your age won’t exclude you from any of our cover options. What’s excluded from your policy will depend on the level of protection you choose. At Age Co, we offer three levels of travel insurance, as well as a range of extras. If you want to make sure you’re fully protected, it’s worth reading the terms and conditions, so you understand what you’ll be covered for while away. You can also talk to the provider and ask them for more information on your travel insurance options.
For help selecting your policy, please call: 0800 030 4885
Lines open: Mon-Fri: 8.30am – 8pm; Sat: 9am – 5:30pm; Sun: 10am – 5pm. Excluding bank holidays. Calls will be recorded.
How much will over 80s travel insurance cost?
The price of your travel insurance will depend on a number of different factors, including:
- Destination
- Length of stay
- Medical history
- Age
- Planned activities
- Desired level of coverage
For travellers over 80, who may have a pre-existing condition, you could consider opting for more cost-effective holidays to offset any additional insurance costs if you're on a budget. For instance, holidays in Europe cost less to insure than those in America, due to the latter’s expensive healthcare system. You’ll also find costs go up for cruise holidays, as health emergencies at sea can incur higher costs, and you’ll often need to add extra protection to your standard policy to account for this.
Where can I go with an over 80s insurance policy?
If you’ve got the means to get there, then nowhere is off-limit. However, certain destinations will cause the price of your travel insurance to go up. This will either be down to the high price of healthcare in that country (for instance, the USA ) or because there is a greater risk of catching a disease while aboard (countries known for tropical diseases). For older travellers, it’s worth bearing in mind that you’re unlikely to be covered if you’re travelling against the advice of your doctor.
Can I add medical equipment or my carer to my policy?
Yes. If you’re over 80 and want to bring medical equipment or a carer on your next holiday, Age Co Travel Insurance can help offer protection. Medical equipment is covered as standard on all policies. You can also choose to include Travelling Companion Cover, which is available as an optional extra. Whether your companion is a family member, friend, or carer, this will cover any expenses that occur should you be unable to travel and have to cancel your trip.
